Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas (SHCC) and Greenville Health System (GHS) have developed one of the largest certified athletic training networks in the nation and now serve over 50 middle schools, public and private high schools, professional baseball, university athletics, recreation districts, and national events held in the upstate of South Carolina. Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine, a division of SHCC, has combined Certified Athletic Trainers with our physicians and sports medicine specialists to create a team approach for injury prevention, treatment, and the rehabilitation of sports related injuries. The best ways to care for athletic injuries is achieved through a comprehensive approach that includes care from both physicians and athletic trainers. Our sports medicine team works together to provide the best care for over 20,000 South Carolina student athletes at no charge to the organizations we serve. As one of the first healthcare providers on the scene when injuries occur, athletic trainers are educated, trained, and are able to recognize, evaluate, and assess injuries and provide immediate care when needed.
One of the main goals of the athletic training network is to help reduce injuries sustained by student athletes through prevention, education, research, and proper evaluation of athletic injuries. We have a fully integrated concussion program designed to identify and help our specialty trained team physicians and athletic trainers manage athletes who have sustained a concussion. We are continuously conducting research in several areas of sports injury and trauma.
