The Shoulder Institute
Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas specializes in providing innovative treatments for a full range of basic and complex shoulder problems. Not only to we treat the degenerative shoulder conditions that are so common in the United States, but our team is also very experienced in the biomechanics of shoulder problems in athletes, particularly those related to throwing.
We provide a full range of treatments, including complete programs of nutrition, preventive motion, performance training, surgical management and individually tailored rehabilitation plans.
FOCUSED ON RESULTS.
At Steadman Hawkins, we do things differently. Our goal is to provide a definitive diagnosis of the condition and develop an individualized treatment plan starting with a patient’s first visit. We initially try the most conservative options because, for many shoulder problems, medication and physical therapy are the best treatments.
A Respected Team: Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas has one of the largest and most experienced groups of fellowship-trained surgeons focused on shoulder conditions in the Southeast, including the co-founder of the practice, Dr. Richard J. Hawkins, one of the most respected experts in the world.
A Community of Care: We are proud to be a founding member of the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health & Wellness at Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center, the region’s most comprehensive health care provider.
PROVEN PARTNERSHIPS.
Our partner, Proaxis Therapy, is one of the most sophisticated physical therapy providers in the Southeast, with several Ph.D. physiotherapy experts on staff specializing in shoulder problems. We’ve even developed a shoulder therapy and sports performance team to rehabilitate and strengthen shoulders, helping to prevent future injury. This team works directly with our surgeons to provide the best care for each patient.
AHEAD OF THE CURVE.
Our surgeons use the latest techniques, many that have been developed by Steadman Hawkins and focus on minimally invasive methods that reduce post-surgical pain and maximize recovery. With the exception of shoulder replacement and fractures, the majority of shoulder surgeries, such as rotator cuff repairs, are performed arthroscopically.
A VARIETY OF CONDITIONS.
From minor tendonitis to tears and fractures, our team can treat a complete range of common and complex shoulder conditions.
- Tendonitis
- Bursitis
- Rotator cuff tears
- Shoulder arthritis
- Shoulder instability
- Shoulder impingement
- Frozen shoulder
ROOTED IN RESEARCH.

This commitment to the next generation of orthopaedic medicine is evident in the fellowship and residency programs of the Orthopaedic Research Foundation of the Carolinas, a joint venture with the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health & Wellness.
